Heavy rainfall concept
Linear Shoring provides XXL-sized working space
Until recently, Asbach, a district of the Thuringian town of Schmalkalden, had not been connected to the urban sewerage system. However, the situation was improved in two stages: The first 200 meters of the planned combined sewer had already been laid in 2014 and a further 500 meters were installed in a follow-up order in 2015. At the same time, the local sewage treatment administration union “Schmalkalden and district” wanted to create additional volume for rainwater collection.
The authority finally decided for a solution consisting of two components: To adequately handle future heavy rainfall events, a 51-meter-long rainwater storage canal made of DN 3000-standard GRP piping was installed to control the flow of rainwater into the sewerage system and an additional rainwater over flow structure made of prefabricated concrete components was installed to relieve pressure on the Schmalkalden sewage treatment plant.
To secure the construction pits, Herzog-Bau GmbH of Tüttleben, the construction contractor, selected the Linear Shoring system from Emunds+Staudinger, a proprietary brand of today’s thyssenkrupp Infrastructure. The decision paid off for a number of reasons: The technical options provided by the Linear Shoring system, particularly the use of U-version boogie cars, ensured sufficient pipe culvert height during the construction of the rainwater storage canal. The attachment of the longitudinal outer waler and bracing the base of the middle pair of soldiers created the conditions for the installation of the large, prefabricated concrete components needed to construct the rainwater over flow reservoir.
The installation of the rainwater overflow, which consisted of prefabricated concrete components, required an especially large construction window.
Waler enables large construction window
Prefabricated components weighing up to 37 tons per piece were used to construct the rainwater over ow reservoir. The impressive size oft the structure was also re enacted in the dimensions of the construction pit, which was between 4 and 5 meters deep and 3.65 meters in clear width. In order to secure the pit, a special-purpose technical solution was called for, which increases the options available with conventional linear shoring.
Firstly, two Linear Shoring modules were installed in the construction pit. The attachment of the longitudinal outer waler and bracing the base of the middle pair of soldiers made it possible to install the large concrete components. Shortly before installation, the middle boogie car was completely removed from the shoring and the outer soldier construction was then able to bear the entire load.
