Water feeder pipeline
Flexible Corner Railshoring secured the construction of the new manholes
Both the district town Nördlingen and the villages of Holheim and Nähermemmingen, which belong to Nördlingen, obtain their drinking water from the Ederheim source region around 6 kilometers away. At the end of 2014, the nal section of the spring water feeder pipeline was replaced. The pipeline was originally built in 1896 and is today operated by the Nördlingen city public utility company.
The sections running through Riegelberg and Kampf presented a tough challenge for the renewal of around 1,550 meters of pipeline in the final construction phase. Both the laying of the new pipeline in the tunnel and the removal of the old material were highly demanding tasks for the contractor, Carl Heuchel GmbH & Co. KG, as was the replacement of the manholes, which were originally built in brick and from where the tunnels had first been constructed.
The old manholes needed to be exposed and demolished. During the laying of the new pipeline the original manholes were replaced with new elements consisting of prefabricated reinforced concrete components. To secure the construction pits required for the work, the contractor decided for Corner Rail shoring from Emunds+Staudinger, a proprietary brand of thyssenkrupp Infrastructure.
The Corner Rail shoring combined with the U-version boogie car provided the required stability and a maximum amount of working space.
Easy and flexible to use
Corner Rail shoring is a specially designed shoring solution that is very suitable for working on manholes, among other applications. As a rule, the system consists of four slide-rail panels and four corner rail soldiers. It does not require special bracing systems, and all forces are transferred by the shoring panels. The system is not only very stable, it is also simple and exible to use, as the panels of various lengths are used in pairs and rectangular pits of greatly differing sizes can be constructed. The system is efficient, inexpensive, and cost-effective.
With the corresponding soldiers, the Corner Rail shoring can be implemented either as a single-rail or as an overlapping shoring. In the Nördlingen project, the overlapping version was deployed. As several elds were installed, the U-version boogie car was used on site.
After three months of construction, the project was completed on time and the new pipeline was put into operation. Pressure testing and water sampling operations were conducted successfully and the supply of Nördlingen, Holheim, and Nähermemmingen with natural Ederheim spring water is now guaranteed again on a permanent basis.
