Expansion of the geothermal district heating network in Waldkraiburg, Bavaria.
The public utility company in Waldkraiburg decided to connect the western part of the city to an existing geothermal district heating network. This was achieved by installing district heating pipelines via open trench excavation along a new route next to the roadway. Empty conduits for power and water lines as well as broadband cables were also added in some areas.
The company used the krings KVL trench box to secure the 1.55-meter-wide and 1.60-meter-deep trench. This small steel box was specially designed for trench work in urban areas and is available in module lengths of 2 and 3 meters. Because district heating pipes can become as hot as 120 °C and expand or contract accordingly as a result of temperature fluctuations, buffer systems, among other components, were installed in the pipeline network.
In Waldkraiburg, the contractors decided to use U-shaped expansion bends. These components were installed in the pipeline route approximately every 100 to 120 meters. In the past, the company used wooden planks or steel plates to secure the necessary trenches, but decided to use a completely new system for this project – the krings corner shoring unit. The innovative corner shoring unit makes it possible to easily and safely shore longitudinal pipe trench deviations of up to 90°, resulting in considerable cost and time savings. And this is true for both installation and dismantling.
All in all, ten krings corner shoring modules were used in Waldkraiburg. The company was able to complete the entire project on schedule, and all those involved were impressed with the product’s ease of use.
